What Size Football Jersey Should I Buy? (India Sizing Guide)
Quick Summary
Player Version is the most premium, authentic jersey closest to what footballers wear on the pitch. Fan Version is the comfortable, everyday option built for casual wear. Neither is "better" — it depends on how you'll wear it.
Here's something most jersey sellers won't tell you: a Large is not a Large.
Football jersey sizes change from season to season, and even between kits from the same club in the same season. We've been sizing jerseys for over four years, and it still catches people out every week.
This guide explains why sizing is harder than it looks, and how to get it right anyway.
Why jersey sizing is genuinely complicated
1. Every season is cut differently
Brands change their patterns from one season to the next. Some years a size runs true. Other years it runs a full size small. In one season we stocked, a Large fitted like a Medium, so anyone who normally wears a Large needed an XL at minimum. Ordering their usual size meant a jersey that was uncomfortably tight across the chest and shoulders.
That isn't a rare exception. It's why "I always wear a Medium" is not a safe way to order a jersey.
2. Different kits from the same club fit differently
The main home and away kits are usually cut one way. Third, fourth and special-edition kits are often cut differently, sometimes by a noticeable margin.
3. Different collections fit differently
World Cup kits, lifestyle collections and club match kits each follow their own sizing. A Large in one collection can fit very differently from a Large in another.
4. Player Version runs slim
On top of all that, Player Version jerseys are cut close to the body by design. There's no loose fabric, because that's how they're worn on the pitch. Fan Version is cut straighter and closer to a regular t-shirt.
Our Player Version vs Fan Version breakdown explains the difference in detail.
So how do you get it right?
Rule 1: Don't trust your usual size
Treat every jersey as its own size chart. The letter on the tag tells you less than the measurements do.
Rule 2: Measure a shirt you already own
- Find a t-shirt or jersey that fits you exactly the way you want your new jersey to fit.
- Lay it flat on a bed or table. Smooth it out without stretching it.
- Chest width: measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other.
- Length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder straight down to the bottom hem.
- Compare both numbers to the size chart on the product page and pick the closest match.
Rule 3: When in doubt, size up
A jersey that's slightly loose looks fine and feels fine. A jersey that's slightly tight gets worn twice and then lives in a drawer. Size up if you're between sizes, have broad shoulders, plan to layer a t-shirt underneath, or are ordering a Player Version or full sleeve jersey.
Rule 4: Ask us before you order
This is the one that matters most. Because sizing changes by season and by kit, the most reliable answer comes from someone who has handled that exact jersey. Message us on WhatsApp with your usual size and how you like it to fit, and we'll tell you honestly which size to take for that specific kit.
Common questions
Does a football jersey shrink after washing?
Not if you look after it. Cold water, inside out, air dry. Hot water and tumble dryers are what shrink jerseys, and they damage badges and printing too. Full details in our jersey care guide.
Is Indian sizing different from European sizing?
Yes. European kit sizing generally runs smaller than what Indian brands label with the same letter. It's another reason sizing up is the safer default.
I'm buying it as a gift and can't measure anything. What do I do?
Find out what size t-shirt they wear and message us on WhatsApp. Describe their build, and we'll recommend a size for that specific jersey.
What if I still get it wrong?
Message us. Our policies are written on the site, not hidden in a DM. Personalised jerseys are the exception: once a name is printed on a shirt, it can't be resold, which is why we'd much rather spend two minutes on your size before you order.
